A section featuring the recreated world map will be added to the mainpage.

Just a few days ago, maps were removed from FANDOM as a whole. This is very unfortunate as the World of Avatar map was one of the best out there. Anyway, I asked LL if I could remove it and she agreed; stating that we could replace it some other day. With that said, I have a couple of ideas as to what we could replace it with. They are both things I found on Wookiepedia (the Star Wars Wiki).

  1. Did you know...: In this section, we have a few trivia (from Wookiepedia's newest articles). We could select trivia and place it on the mainpage for people to read. The flaw I find in this one is that we would have to manually update it, but it doesn't have to be hard. I find that if we did this, it would probably be best to do this with no vote and have an administrator update the trivia each month or so (if it's not too much trouble).
  2. On this day...: Possibly a bit harder to make, but can be automatic when finished. I can help gather the information necessary for this, bit it would really only be looking through the Real world category. This will show what things were released on that day.

I am leaning more toward "on this day" myself, but if anyone has any other suggestions, they're more than welcome. --Tono555 Read my Fanon! 07:37, July 31, 2017 (UTC)

Random trivia seems a bit ... well, subjective, because everyone has a different opinion to what makes a trivia interesting. Additionally, not all trivia sections are of the best quality, as I know there are plenty that could do with some love and editing ^^". (And speaking as someone who would have to do the updating, the fact that it needs to be updated manually also puts me off, especially when you look at how well that generally goes with main page highlighting ^^")
The "on this day..." idea sounds fun, but I'm not so sure how effective it will be since I don't think there are so many releases that can cover this section.
This will also involve a lot of work, but perhaps we can just recreate the map but without the interaction (obviously), something similar to Map of the World of Avatar, but then up to date with TLoK. Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 08:50, July 31, 2017 (UTC)
Personally, I like the idea of the new updated map the most, as I was never really sold on the interactive part in the first place. Sounds like a good way to get some mileage out of the updates LoK provided. As to the original two Tono proposed, I'm more for the "Did you know..." section, because I feel like the "On this day..."-section would soon fill up with birthdays of people we have to begrudgingly call celebrities. An updated map sounds like a great idea! Especially if I can improve it with some js, that'd be even better. If we really wanted to, we could recreate what wikia had in place by ourselves (although I think that would be against the ToS). Making some lesser version with limited interactivity and pop up displays for lore purposes from individual map pins is still absolutely possible however. KettleMeetPotwall 18:05, July 31, 2017 (UTC)
If an improved map is possible with JS, then I'm all for it. The pop-up displays sound great. --Tono555 Read my Fanon! 18:20, July 31, 2017 (UTC)

Perhaps we could ask FANDOM first whether or not recreating the map feature ourselves is allowed? If not, I'm all for the JS improved map. Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 21:52, July 31, 2017 (UTC)

The map sounds like a great idea, I don't think the loss of interaction would be too much of a big deal if done right. As for the 'On this day...', that could be interesting, it would just have to be updated daily. Unless a bot could do it, once we hate trivia for every day of the year...? Sounds good. I can ask FANDOM myself if there's no problem with that. Or since KMP is going to do it, maybe it would be better if he does it? Anyway, I would like to have the 'On this day...' as well. I don't know how you all feel about adding both the map and 'On this day...'.
What Wookiepedia does is transclude a page called "July 31" (for example) onto the template. What we could do is create pages in a certain namespace; maybe even in a userspace. So for example: we create a page called "User:Tono555/July 31" then on the template we add {{User:Tono555/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}} }}.
This way, the template updates itself. As I said before, the only hard thing would be creating it, but I'm willing to help or even do it myself if necessary and if found interesting. I agree with AA7 that adding people's birthdays would be ridiculous, so how about adding release dates for episodes, comics, etc. and maybe trivia so that we have 5 things to show each day? Trivia can be repeated, I don't believe that should be a problem. --Tono555 Read my Fanon! 23:28, July 31, 2017 (UTC)
I'm not really all that enthusiastic about those two options for reasons named above. I don't think there are enough release dates etc. to keep things interesting. Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 05:47, August 1, 2017 (UTC)

I'm new(ish) (again) but if we're talking about the mainpage can I make a small, somewhat unrelated suggestion to slightly modify the 'featured article' to actually give the name of the article? (do i need to start a new WR to do that? @_@).
As for the topic of this particular page, I personally don't mind adding a 'did you know', but i think that an 'on this day' would be difficult because there aren't as many IU articles that give specific dates of things. Frui (🌹🐝🐝🐝) 05:53, August 1, 2017 (UTC)

Yes check Done in regards to the note about the featured article. Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 06:04, August 1, 2017 (UTC)

Just to add this to the record, I did contact Wikia technical staff to check if we would be allowed to use the [Leaflet] mapping service to recreate our map. They said that they would approve its use for this purpose. As a status update, the map has basic functionality so far, and I have plans to add in custom markers, lists, map overlays, and reference boxes with text and links to elsewhere in the wiki. There is an issue pertaining to where all the information for this additional data should be kept: possibly in the javascript or on a mainspace page. However, I think that should be a discussion for another time, when we are closer to the finished product, and so I will expand upon that then. KettleMeetPotwall 12:38, August 19, 2017 (UTC)

You absolutely rock, KMP! Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 13:18, August 19, 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for the kind words! The earliest iteration of js for the map has been approved by wikia staff, and is available here to be tested by all. In it, I have temporarily included a coordinate reference system going by latitude and longitude on the bottom left hand corner - just click a point to find its coordinates. It will be removed in the final release. In addition, I have plans to establish a visual editing tool so that pins and markers can be placed on the map by users in real time, but the only way to add markers as of now is to edit the javascript. In the meantime, if any of you wish to contribute to the mapping project, you can help by creating a list of locations and matching them to likely coordinates on the map. Also, feedback is always welcome, and please advise me if you come across any bugs or inconsistencies. KettleMeetPotwall 06:52, August 22, 2017 (UTC)
After compiling all known locations into the coordinate system & importing some of them into your map database, I noticed that the links are dysfunctional & the description does not seem to show even after clicking the marker icon. Also, it would be nice if there is a way to align & fix the center point of the marker at the selected data point on the map. It looks like this misalignment only applies to the general, capital & manmade marker icons which are placed further north than expected since it is aligning the bottom point of the image, rather than at the center. Do you think all of these could be fixed?

Also as a side note, I would like to see symbols of the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation as additional markers used on the map. Thanks for your consideration!

The images used for the markers were changed recently, hence that problem with alignment. Ditto with the marker anchor points. The code has already been fixed to reflect that, however the only times you will see the changes is when the new script revisions have been approved by wikia staff - which occurs every couple of days. In addition to that, the map code is being constantly changed to add, fix, or remove features, so do not expect anything except the basic coordinate reference display to be working until I give an official direction here stating otherwise. Addressing your concern on the marker data and links, I have not yet fully implemented that system. What you see there is a placeholder; that is why it does not use the descriptions yet and it does not accept links. This is because of the complexities involved in requesting page data from the MediaWiki API, as any data received from the server requires refinement before it can be used in any meaningful way. The function to do that is relatively complex, so that is why I have kept that apparatus very simple until I get the time to complete it. And it will take quite some time. KettleMeetPotwall 09:08, August 24, 2017 (UTC)

Solely commenting on the markers, I personally would prefer to keep them as simple as possible so to avoid an overload of different images. The only reason why I opted to use the Air Nomad symbol for the air temples is because the AN's territory is less clearly defined than than of other nations. When a marker is placed in the red territory if the Fire Nation, it's already clear that it's a FN marker without the need to have that marker be the FN emblem. Same with the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribe. Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 09:28, August 24, 2017 (UTC)
