Fanon or fan fiction in Avatar refers to the practice of writing new stories based on existing and/or new characters for the pre-existing Avatar universe. Many fans wrote fanon for the purposes of "Shipping".
It is quite a popular practice for Avatar fans, who can write stories based an extensive universe that does have enough unknowns and holes to allow expansion by fanon.
