Avatar: The Last Airbender – Into the Inferno, or Avatar: The Legend of Aang – Into the Inferno, as it is known in Europe, is a video game based on Book Three of Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was released on October 13, 2008, in the United States and on November 1, 2008, in the United Kingdom.

Plot[]

Avatar Aang awakens on a captured Fire Nation ship with his friends, recovered from the ordeal in Ba Sing Se. They hear the horn of an approaching ship and make their way to the back, where they fight off firebending soldiers. Aang finds out about the plan to invade the Fire Nation during a solar eclipse, which will render the firebenders powerless. They realize they are in need of supplies, so they venture into a Fire Nation town disguised as civilians. Afterward, they discover a Fire Nation Army factory is polluting and hurting the people of a village called Jang Hui. Aang and Katara use waterbending to destroy the factory and save the village. In doing this however, they catch the attention of General Mung, whom they must defeat.

During the invasion, Sokka and Toph secure a tower so Aang and Toph can defeat Fire Lord Ozai. It turns out that Princess Azula tricked them into fighting the Dai Li instead. Prince Zuko joins the Avatar's group when the invasion plan fails and helps them escape. Later, Sokka and Zuko sneak into the Boiling Rock, a Fire Nation prison, to free Hakoda and Suki. Azula and Ty Lee try to stop them from escaping, but Mai intervenes, which gives them an opportunity. At the Western Air Temple, Toph and Sokka fight off Combustion Man, and Zuko and Aang find and solve the Chamber of the Elements to contact Avatar Roku.

Preparing to use the power of Sozin's Comet to destroy the Earth Kingdom, Azula is proclaimed the new Fire Lord while Ozai declares himself the Phoenix King. Zuko must fight and defeat Azula, with the help of Katara. Afterward, Aang and Katara must defeat Phoenix King Ozai to stop the Fire Nation and end the Hundred Year War permanently.

Gameplay[]

Avatar Into the Inferno DS gameplay

Katara waterbends an ice bridge.

Gameplay styles vary widely between the PlayStation 2, Wii, and Nintendo DS versions.

In the Nintendo DS version, the characters have very large heads, giving the game a cartoonish feel similar in design to the Super Deformed Shorts. Katara is able to make ice bridges and ice blocks, albeit only when the player is fighting Azula, as well as bloodbend. Sokka's boomerang is used to stun enemies, reach objects, or solve puzzles, following a path drawn by the player. Toph can move earth blocks and metal blocks or raise columns, and Aang can make mini-tornadoes and can also move earth blocks. One can also play as Zuko who can make a line of fire.

Avatar Into the Inferno PS2 gameplay

Aang and Sokka stand on top of a building next to some scaffolding.

The Wii version has a new style of gameplay different from previous Avatar games. Aang can airbend an "air ball" to break down obstacles and blow away objects by shaking the Wii Remote. Toph can slide earth out of rock walls to reach the top by sliding the Wii Remote backward. Katara can guide water by standing on a puddle of water pressing the "A button" and moving the Wii remote in the right direction to extinguish fires. The pointer can act as a star and the light of a flashlight.

Game overview[]

The Awakening[]

Aang wakes on a Fire Navy ship. Katara greets him and states how she was glad he was okay. They find that the ship has been damaged by another attacking Fire Navy vessel and use their prowess in bending to navigate the ship to the deck. Aang and Katara repel several Fire Nation boarding parties. Once they make it to the main deck, Aang uses his earthbending to prime several catapults with boulders, destroying the opposing Fire Nation ship.

The Arms Factory[]

Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph arrive at a Fire Nation fishing village. The majority of the village is contaminated with disease and sickness due to a large Fire Nation arms factory built nearby polluting the river with waste. Aang and Katara infiltrate the factory and navigate it. They eventually disable the factory and escape. As a result, the waste from the factory is stopped and the village water source is purified.

Pier Fight[]

In the morning, a delegation of Fire Nation soldiers attacks the village as punishment for the destruction of their factory. Aang and Katara defend the village from the soldiers and eventually face General Mung, leader of the soldiers. They achieve victory and Mung ends up floating in the river.

Day of Black Sun[]

The plan to invade the Fire Nation on the day of the solar eclipse is activated and the small ragtag army led by Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Hakoda are transported via submarine to the shores of the Fire Nation capital. Sokka and Toph strive to capture a Fire Nation tower in order to cause a distraction for Aang and Toph to infiltrate the Fire Nation underground bunker where Fire Lord Ozai is hiding.

Fire Lord in Hiding[]

Aang and Toph find Ozai's secret bunker but finds Azula there instead. Azula reveals two Dai Li agents and sends them against the Avatar and his earthbending master. Aang and Toph manage to subdue the Dai Li, but at that moment, the eclipse ends and Azula uses her renewed firebending to escape.

The Boiling Rock[]

Zuko joins the party to teach Aang firebending. He confirms to Sokka that his father Hakoda has been imprisoned in the Fire Nation prison known as the Boiling Rock. Sokka and Zuko utilize a stolen Fire Nation war balloon to reach the prison. The war balloon is destroyed, but they manage to infiltrate the prison and rescue Hakoda as well as Suki. They steal a gondola to escape.

Escape[]

Sokka and Zuko face Azula, who is assisted by the chi-blocking Ty Lee, on the gondola as they make their escape. Despite Azula's superior firebending and Ty Lee's agility and chi-blocking, Sokka and Zuko defeat them and escape.

The Mercenary[]

After Team Avatar fled to the uninhabited Western Air Temple, Toph and Sokka battle Combustion Man in the ruins, ultimately defeating him by blocking his "third eye" from which he blasts beams of super heat.

The Western Air Temple[]

Aang, accompanied by Zuko, explores the Western Air Temple for some time, fighting hordes of hog monkeys. They find the Chamber of Elements and solve it, triggering the arrival of Avatar Roku's spirit, who tells Aang that he is ready to fight the Fire Lord, though Aang refuses to take Ozai's life. The Fire Nation attacks and damages the temple with war balloons and airships. They escape on Appa.

Rise of the Phoenix King[]

Zuko and Katara board Azula's warship. Azula, who was been named Fire Lord in place of Ozai, who has become the Phoenix King, attacks them with Fire Nation soldiers and Royal Firebenders. After subduing her minions, the two face Azula and defeat her. She manages to blast lightning at Katara, but Zuko jumps in front of her and takes the blast.

Into the Inferno[]

In Wulong Forest in the Earth Kingdom, Phoenix King Ozai battles with Aang and Katara, preparing to use the power of Sozin's Comet to burn the Earth Kingdom. Using their bending, Aang and Katara defeat Ozai, and Aang takes away his bending powers. In his jail cell, Ozai rants that as the Phoenix King, he would destroy them all when one of the prisoners asks if he will have his dinner. Peace falls over the world, and Zuko is crowned Fire Lord.

Goofs[]

  • In Rise of the Phoenix, when Zuko and Katara face Azula, Katara is wearing the outfit she wore during the invasion. However, in the cutscene, when Zuko jumps in front of Azula's lightning to save Katara, she is wearing her Fire Nation disguise.
  • In the DS version of the level "The Runaway", the player is playing with Katara and Toph; however, the 'switch icon' shows them playing with Aang and Toph.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike its two predecessors, this game more closely follows the canon of the series, though there are some differences:
    • In the game, Aang is joined by Katara in the final fight against Ozai, while he faced the firebender by himself in the series.
    • In the game, after Aang defeats Ozai by taking his bending, Zuko meets up with the Avatar at Wulong Forest. This did not happen in the series.
  • In The Boiling Rock level of the game, Sokka is wearing his Fire Nation disguise, while he wore his sleeveless Water Tribe outfit before donning a prison guard uniform as a disguise in the series.
  • This game also features a shop in which one can purchase music, pictures, character profiles, and videos.
  • In the character bios displayed in the gallery on Ember Island, every member of Team Avatar, save for Aang, is wearing their Fire Nation disguise, even though Toph never wore hers in-game.
  • This game is the only one of the three console games in which Katara does not do a prologue narration of any kind.
